march 2008
As many of you know the sale went wonderfully. It was a mad house, but I think everyone got away with some great deals and you all really helped us prepare for our new look. In case you have not made it back to the store we are now organized in terms of yarn weight. Meaning if you have a project in mind and you know what gauge you should be looking for then you only have to look in one part of the store. Or perhaps you are like many of our regulars who have found they only like working on a particular size needle than all your yarns are in the same place in the shop. We are hoping this will help you all educate yourselves more within the world of yarn as well as helping us find just the right yarn for your next project. Please let us know what you think. Also keep your eye out as new yarns are being added each week. Happy knitting!!!

Classes are Going Great!
Classes are going really well so far this year.
The Square of the Month groups are closing in on their shawls. As some of them near the end we are looking into other ideas to keep the classes going. If lace is something you may be interested in let us know at the shop. there is a lace sampler class which can start late March early April. This would be the perfect accessory for Spoletto events.
Knit's First KAL onto the next KAL
The first KAL has been going so well. Most people have finished completely or at least they are very close. We at the shop had so much fun that we wanted to start another KAL. We are looking at the Hexacomb Cardigan in the lastest issue of INTERWEAVE. Please let us know what you think or if you have another suggestion. We are hoping to get started at the beginning of April for a great little Spring sweater.
Cat Bordhi Baby Sock
Come learn a whole new way to look at sock knitting! Cat has really taken sock construction and made it a free for all. Come learn some of her great techniques. We will be working on a baby sock and should finish at least one in the class period. Please bring your choice of needle in US size 4. Meaning bring double points, two circs or one circ. Previous sock experience is required for this class. March 15th 2-5pm Class cost: $75 yarn included.
Felted Pillow
Combining color work with felting seemed like a great idea for a fun project. Luckily for us Louet put together a great kit that we are going to use for class; this will make a great accent for any room. Limited spaces avaliable so sign up fast. March 18th 5:00pm
Class cost: $75 kit included.
A nonrefundable deposit of $10 will be required to hold your spot for one time classes.

Classes are Going Great!
Classes are going really well so far this year.
The Square of the Month groups are really going on their shawls. The day group has started meeting once a week so they are zipping along on their projects. The night group is moving slowly and really taking the time to enjoy their projects, plus many of them have a few other UFOS on their needles. If you are interested in the Squares Group please give us a call and you can join in the fun, the day class meets every Tuesday and the night group meets the second Tuesday of every month.
The yarn exploration class went really well last Saturday. I think we will be offering that class again sometime this year so if you missed it - keep your eye out for the next round.
Knit's First KAL
We here at KNIT finally decided to have an offical KNIT ALONG!!! Join us this Thursday January 31st to start Mr. Greenjeans from knitty.com. Any and all interested should let us know either by coming to the shop or shooting me an email. This is a top down raglan style cardigan for those of you who were interested in having this for a class. Knitting along may be the best way to learn and there will always be someone there to ask a question because so many of us will be working on it. We will be casting on Thursday starting around 5pm. The more we have - the more fun this will be, plus think of the party we can have when everyone finishes their sweater!!!!
Bead Knitting
Our second installment of the bead knitting class is still set for February 26th. I have two classes on this day - one at 1pm and one at 5pm. Please call to sign up. Kits are included in the price. $55.00
Entrelac
For those of you curious about this pattern now is your chance. This is a lot of fun to knit and you will learn plenty about short rows, how to pick up stitches and the most useful tool of knitting backwards. Yes, I said backwards. A great skill when it comes to short rows and bobbles. This will be an exploration class so no big project will be worked, but you should have a large enough swatch to make a pillow (which is what I did with my first piece). Come by the shop to check it out and to sign up for the class. February 12th 5:00pm
Class cost: $40 one skein of yarn included.
Finishing Techniques
Yes, we all hate it, but we all have to do it. Now is your chance to really learn the skills needed to finish your sweaters. This class will have homework needed in order to practice so signing up ahead of time is crucial. There are also a few other tricks that we will be able to pass on in this class. Space is limited to only six people so sign up now!!! Four, Six inch stst swatches are needed for class along with left over yarn from swatches and the needles used. February 16th 12-3pm Class cost: $50.00
A nonrefundable deposit of $10 will be required to hold your spot for one time classes.

TNNA Market
Okay we had a great time in California even though it was alot of work. We came back with some great ideas and there is some great yarn headed our way. Starting with all the great organics we found: From Rowan we will have organic cotton, you can even track the farm your yarn came from just by checking your label and searching online. Pretty amazing stuff. Lorna's Laces came out with Organic Wool. Some of the softest colors I have ever seen, they are stunning. Also from Lorna's; five new colorways, they do color so well I think you will be blown away. Keep your eye out for Tanglewood Fibers a new handspun yarn that will have you begging for more. We will be carrying the superwash merino, cashmere and the cashmere/silk blend. This is the yarn to top all yarns so come check out a sample sweater and hat at the shop. Also coming back to our shelves is Alchemy. Gina Wilde, owner and artist of the company is coming out with two great books this year. The first is full of already loved Alchemy patterns. The second is an extraordinary book on the Shibori technique which will blow your mind. She will be coming to Charleston to sign books, show off her techniques and just be her fabulous self. You do not want to miss this. Even Kaffe Fasset and Brandon Malby were begging yarn off her at the market. Her yarn will be in the shop August and she will be here in September!!! Check out Baby Boo already knit up in the shop. There will be other surprises including some great patterns from Skif, Stitch Diva, and many more. Marianne and I had fun and we hope we can bring some of the fun to you. |

Stich N Bitch
Our Stitch N Bitch night has gotten crazy. Last week we had 28 people in the shop and that did not include those of us working. We are so lucky to have customers who want to be here. I am extending an invitation to those of you out there who have knitting groups that meet in the mornings or afternoons all around town. Why not plan a field trip to the shop and come check out what's new? Just give us a quick call to let us know you are headed our way so we can have plenty of space. 843.937.8500 |

Don't forget to come help us clean out by joining us February 2nd for a store wide sale starting at 9am. Please - we do not want to count all this yarn!!! Happy Knitting. |

September is here!!!
Mollie is turning 30 and the sale is still going strong. If you have not made it in yet, please do not hesitate. We are trying to clear out as much space as we can so that we can bring in new and exciting companies. Keep your eyes open for new Berroco, Comfort, I think this will blow Encore out of the water. Also headed our way are 100% hemp yarns, perfect for the Charleston weather.
We are still looking forward to Judy Ditmore’s visit to the shop in October. If you have not signed up for this class yet get a move on, as space is limited. The classes will be Oct. 22 and 23rd. Starting with the sweater class at a cost of $90, next will be a dyeing workshop for $100. Judy is coming to us from Colorado and she is a wonderful fiber artist. I am pretty sure there is not one thing she doesn’t do with fiber, so take advantage of her expertise. Call the shop for further information or to sign up. (843.937.8500)
As for other classes this month, we have our regular meetings: the second Tuesday of the month is still our square of the month class. Some of our students are working on one square design to make a full blanket. Others are working their way through a different square each month. The third Tuesday is our new CBC Purls group. This is a group open to any breast cancer survivors out there, whether you already know how to knit or you need to learn. This is a chance for you to join other survivors and enjoy the benefits of knitting with each other. (check our website for the flyer and further information www.knitk.com) The last Tuesday of the month is our baby knits class. Liz is working feverishly hard on her christening gown. Come join her and work on any baby project of your choosing. We will be here to help you along the way. Of course, we always have our Stitch N Bitch crowd on Thursdays and we are more than happy to start any beginners on this night. Just give us a call ahead so we know to expect you. We would love to have a daytime Stitch N Bitch if there are any of you out there who are looking to knit during the week. Please let us know or just start stopping in to knit. Saturdays are also a great day to stop in the store and pull out some knitting. We have a regular crowd who loves to have new members of their crazy group they come in at open (10am) and stay till close (6pm).
As for new classes, Gay has been watching Knitting Gritty nonstop since she got back into town from the mountains. That will be our inspiration for classes this month. Starting with an aran blanket, cables are huge this season on sweaters, blankets, even socks. So come learn how to make cables with Gay. She will be making one square a month (much like our square of the month) containing cables, bobbles and all other aran goodies. Some people find cables intimidating, but do not let that stop you since you will only be making a square. Not much time is wasted and new skills can be used for bigger projects down the road. Mollie will be teaching a hat class, but not your everyday roll brim. Instead it is a rasta hat complete with a small brim (optional of course). Socks are still a huge deal in the knitting world and we would hate for anyone to miss out, so we will be offering a sock class once again. This time we are going with the double points and making just one sock at a time. If you are interested in other options such as two socks on two circs or the magic loop method we can always add a class to help you. As we have done in the past we let the first person who signs up determine the time and date of the classes, so sign up quickly. We will always take suggestions for classes and would love any input our customers may have for classes. If you have a project you need help with just call ahead and make an appointment. We will be more than happy to help you along.
And once again remember that our sale is ongoing until the big day where we will have a blow out sale starting at nine in the morning. YES I said nine a.m. Mollie will be making a short appearance, but as it is her big birthday she will be relaxing and preparing for the big party later that night. So keep your eyes open for more items going on sale and set your clocks now for the Saturday fun. (door prizes and specials)
From all of us at knit Happy Knitting and we hope to see you soon.
August is here!!!
This is the time of year where school starts, parents have to buy school supplies and start fixing lunches again. Also a time where a lot of you spend most of your day waiting in car lines to pick up or drop off your kids, take this time to start a small project perfect for the car. Think socks, hats or even mittens why not work on some small gifts for teachers for the holidays? Stop by the shop to let us help you find the perfect car project.
Here at knit we are gearing up for some real excitement this fall. We have two great designers coming; Chris Bylsma and Judy Ditmore. Chris will be here September 7-10th and Judy will be here October 22nd and 23rd. Both are very different and I strongly urge all of you to take advantage. More information will be sent your way following this newsletter (if you are online please check the special events page on our website.)
As for ongoing classes; our squares of the month group has found a square they want to expand to create a full size blanket so there is always room to join in on the fun. We are still meeting the second Tuesday of each month. On the fourth Tuesday of each month we are holding a baby knits class. Liz is working very hard on her christening gown. We would love anyone who is interested in joining us. As always our Stitch ‘N Bitch nights are heating up. We still have a lot of fun and lots of new people joining us each week. Please do not hesitate to join in we have all levels of knitters and sometimes we choose to just sit and enjoy each other ignoring our knitting all together. This is also a great time to come in to get any help since there are so many experienced knitters in the room there is always someone willing and ready to help with any knitting question. For those of you who can not make it on Thursdays we still have a pretty good group meeting on Saturdays.
Our Yarn of the Week is still going strong. We had Karabella last month and now we are feature Louisa Harding. She once designed for Rowan and has branched out to start her own line of yarns and knitting book. Keep an eye on the home page of our website to see what yarn will be next. Each week that yarn is featured along with patterns and it is all 30% off. This is a great way to start a sweater or at least experiment with new yarns.
We are also starting a new group CBC Purls. This is a group for cancer survivors only. We here at knit know the great therapeutic qualities of knitting and we want to extend that into the community. We have joined up with the Charleston Breast Center to provide a safe place to get away and be with other survivors. If you are a survivor or know one please pass this on. This group is open to all levels of knitters, we will be offering help to beginners and supplies will be provided on your first visit. This group will start August 22nd please go to our website to download the full flyer. We at knit are very excited about this new venture and look forward to meeting each and everyone of you.
New policy for special orders, we at knit love being able to provide you with just the right yarn for each project however it has come to our attention that not everyone is picking up their special orders. In doing so we have decided as of August 1st 2007 that we will be charging you the full price of your special order in advanced. There will be no refunds unless the yarn is no longer available. We apologize for any inconvenience.
As always we are here to provide private knitting lessons. Please call the shop to make an appointment. We teach beginner lessons as well as helping with new or problem projects. The fall is coming and the holidays will sneak up on us so prepare now. We look forward to seeing you all soon and keep an eye on the website as we are constantly trying to surprise you. Happy Knitting!!!!
July Newsletter
Hello all, I can hardly believe that the month of June is almost over. I wanted to get the newsletter out a little early this time to let you all in on our July sale. We will be closed on the fourth, due to the holiday. However we still wanted to celebrate with our customers so we are going to have a sale on the 5th, 6th, and 7th. Do not miss your chance to get some great deals.
I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. I know we have all been in and out on various vacations. Gay is having a great summer up in the mountains enjoying the cool weather as we all sweat it out here. Mollie has been luckily enough to get out of town herself and Marianne is headed to visit more family. Amy has had a trip of her own to New York City and is constantly working on her new home. Claiborne is happily running around London I am sure she is not missing us one bit. I think that covers just about everyone.
As for the store we are still having a great time on Thursday nights and Saturday all day with our very loyal regulars. They are always happy to welcome new blood so please feel free to stop by and join the crowd.
Starting on June 26th, Mollie begins her baby knitting workshop. This will be an ongoing class meeting once a month. Everyone will be choosing their own projects and we will be sharing our experiences with each pattern. This will give everyone an opportunity to learn more than one skill as they work on a project fit to their skill level.
We are still hoping to provide more classes for everyone this summer so please let us know what you want to learn. We want to make sure everyone has a great summer and does not pass up this time to knit something special. Many people are still knitting socks and Mollie cannot seem to knit enough tank tops. We hope this email finds everyone well and please stop in to let us know how your summers are going. And do not forget this is a great time to get started on early holiday gifts. Happy Knitting from the girls of knit!!!
June Newsletter
Hello fellow knitters. I know it has been a while since you all got to hear from me. First things first, I had an amazing time working on the movie. I am sure you all got bits and pieces from the crew at the shop and there is not enough time or room in this newsletter to tell you everything. Just know it was a blast and who knows what may come in the future. I have a new philosophy of letting life happens as it comes. As of now I am back at the store and so happy to be there. I have seen most of you and I have to say you have all advanced above and beyond in your knitting. I am so proud and so jealous, needless to say I did not get much knitting done while I was away, okay onto shop news.
June has arrived and summer in Charleston has begun, at least with Spoleto here. Never leave home without your knitting. Nothing strikes up conversations with your fellow patrons better than knitting, plus when the show starts late at least you have something to keep you busy. Last year as I sat in a musical performance with my knitting I ran into a customer who was kicking herself for not bringing hers along.
Our regular classes are still on with our stitch n bitch Thursday nights and square of the month (second Tuesday of each month) we just started a new set of designs so any and all our welcome. We still love teaching beginners on Thursdays so call and let us know. No better time to learn than now. What better way to prepare for the holidays than start early?
As always we prefer to ask you, our customers, what classes and activities would suit you best? I personally have a mission to knit as many baby sweaters as possible. No, not for me, but many of my most favorite friends have recently given birth or have found out they will be in the near future. So I would love to start a baby workshop, finding fun and exciting patterns for babies while still learning a new skill. So anyone who wants to join me call the shop and pick a day that will work best for you and we can get to knitting for all the little ones in our lives.
Marianne has really jumped onto sock knitting. (I think I have the same pair on the needles from about six months ago, sorry Amber, one day I will finish your socks.) Anyone who wants to join in or wants to learn should give Marianne a call and start up a socks exploration, testing new yarns, patterns, and even finishing techniques.
Gay, is still trying to get out of town, but I think I am making it hard on her. (George was quite a distraction.) She is all over tank tops at the moment. Using Chevron patterns, cables, and even her own imagination she really does love to take a pattern and make it her own. So if this peaks your interest drop in and find a tank pattern for yourself. Fast and easy projects you can finish quickly and wear out even in the heat of Charleston summer.
Amy is still working on her Blue Sky Alpaca cardigan. It is coming out beautifully and I hope those of you out there working on your own is keeping up. Speaking of keeping up I have yet to touch my koigu jacket. Am I the only one? Those of you who took the class why not pick a time to get together maybe you can jump start me to pull mine out of my bag and actually finish a project. Anyone who has not seen this pattern should stop in the store and check it out. It really is one of the most amazing patterns I have ever worked on and when I do finally finish it I know that it will be with me forever. I would love to start a group again to force me to work on my own.
So there you have it. We are still trying to find times and days that work best for everyone so please let us know what works and what doesn’t. We are here to serve you and we want to keep our community of knitters growing. So pass this on to family and friends. Keep us posted on your latest knitting projects and stay tuned for the designers headed this way. Chris Bylsma and Judy Ditmore two of my favorite knitters be sure to check in on when and what they will be doing while in Charleston.
Again I am so happy to be back, look behind the counter for a picture of me with Jonathan Price, James Bissell, Krista Monroe, and Sweet Tea. All great actors, designers and fabulous people from the movie and yes we are in a bowling alley. Thanks for all your well wishes and I did miss you guys as much as you missed me. Have a great month and Happy Knitting!!!! Mollie
PSS. Amy has been to NY wining and dining and watching theatre. (Didn’t even visit a knit shop – imagine???)
Claiborne has gone home for a brief visit and then to London to “study?” this summer.
Wendy is performing and working with Spoleto and using her talented musical skills.
May Newsletter
May has arrived --- and Mollie is back in town. She was going to “write” to you this month, but she and “George” must still be busy chatting --- I truly think that she has wonderful stories to tell, but it’s hard to come back to reality after the movie set world so I am back again with the latest news.
Charlene Schurch was here last Saturday with her books Sensational Knitted Socks and More Sensational Knitted Socks. There was a room full of knitters who learned how to knit socks starting at the toe and another group that learned how to make fancy heel flaps. All who attended said that they learned quite a few tricks and tips --- so feel free to come in and check with Amy and Marianne, who have knit many socks and took the heel flap class and loved it. Marianne has just finished a sock with the tofuties yarn (with added shells for anti-bacterial benefits) and used a mock cable pattern out of these sock books. Come and see.
The newest sock yarn arrival is from Colinette and is called Jitterbug. Amy picked the colors so come and see her bright choices. They look like summer time and will brighten up the winter blahs (in case if takes that long to knit the socks). Colinette also shipped a new yarn called Banyan which is cotton and viscose. Books have arrived to support this new yarn delivery.
Tina’s class met last week to begin a bag to felt. She will be teaching how to needle felt this Saturday at 10 am. You are welcome to come and join this part of the class even if you didn’t start a bag with us last week. All you need is a piece of felted fabric (you can purchase this – or bring in something that was already felted and needs an update in decoration). Please call the shop and sign up so we can be sure and have room for everyone who plans on attending.
Dana is teaching a class on Thursday, May 17th at 5:00. She made a wonderful beaded bracelet (which you can see in the shop) and I convinced her that she should teach. This month my customers are teaching for me – not knitting. This is an interactive establishment and I want all to share --- whether knitting “for me” or teaching you to knit so eventually you can knit “for me”.
Since the last newsletter 2 new arrivals have been delivered “for me.” Vera took the bottom of a bag that I crocheted out of Rowan rope yarn and corrected their pattern so that she could complete the drawstring bag. Sandy completed her Maggi sweater (out of cashmere not linen ---) and unfortunately for her it was too large for her (even though she did a gauge swatch --) and luckily for me – it’s a perfect fit “for me”. Both of these items are quite wonderful so come and see and become inspired.
New books/magazines/ and yarns continue to arrive – so please come and see.
30% off Adrienne Vittadini yarns and booklets (to be discontinued)/a wall of various yarns and out-of date/back issues of magazines as well as a bucket of single sheet patterns for $1.00
Upcoming events: Mountains in July --- knitting, spinning, weaving, and cool air --- so call for details. Mark your calendars for Chris Bylsma – Sept 7-10 and Judy Ditmore – October 22-23.
New summer camp knitting begins --- we are knitting pillows --- This is our square of the month for 3 months for those of you who are already in the swing of squares and for those who aren’t already --- come and begin. We meet regularly on the second Tuesday night of the month from 5 – 7 and we will be having the same class earlier in the day from 10:30 – 12:30 so that you can plan your morning downtown while the kids are busy with summer camp/ swimming/ etc. Please call ahead so that we will have enough supplies available.
Please note: We can set up classes for individuals and/or small groups any time that you would like. This is another wonderful option for your children during the summer months. We can teach your child to knit and set up regularly scheduled lessons --- the choice is yours.
Please also note ---- KNIT is here for you so let us know what we can offer that will be most beneficial and appealing to you. Thanks for your continued support.
April Newsletter
As I write this update of the new and exciting events coming up in the near future --- many of you are sitting at the Folly Beach Knit In with the Coastal Cultured Purls. I do hope that more of you will be able to join them next year as they begin an annual migration to the beach to sit and knit.
Upcoming immediately is new arrivals of spring and summer yarns. For the month of March all the designer kits in the store are 20% off as well as a new selection of yarns on the sale wall for 20% discount.
APRIL 28 brings CHARLENE SCHURCH and socks for everyone. You MUST have knit at least one sock before (You don’t have to finish the pair --) She is the author of Sensational Knitted Socks and the soon to be released More Sensational Knitted Socks.. Her schedule for the day is
9-12 Toe Up Sock with Heel Flap
Knitting socks from the toe up insures you will have enough yarn to finish the toes – great peace of mind for anyone who has run out of yarn or believed that there would not be enough. Starting at the toe lets you knit a toe without worrying about Grafting the toe together, and working a heel flap “upside down” provides you the ability to reinforce the bottom as well as the back of the heel.
This is a way to orient complex patterns on socks appropriately. You will knit and learn a toe that is simple and fits well. Knitting a heel flap from the toe up provides the maximum flexibility for fit and reinforcement. ($1 handout fee)
12-1 lunch
1-2 formal book signing for either and/or both books
2-5 Fancy Heel Flaps
Many sock heel flaps are knit identically with the ubiquitous heel stitch. Why leave all the patterning for the leg and instep. In this class we will work with variations of heel stitch, adding color and garter or seed stitch to the sides for added interest. Why not jazz up those plain socks with fancy heels. For those who are looking for more interest in their sock knitting. (You must have knit several socks with a heel flap before taking this class.)
Charlene will demonstrate heel stitch, eye of partridge heel stitch, heel stitch in 2 colors, eye of partridge in 2 colors. You will learn how to determine the correct length of a heel flap when working with colors. ($1 handout fee)
Cost of each class is $40 (prepaid by April 15) or you may pay $80 (prepay $40) for the entire day and lunch is included for those spending the day and taking both classes.
Charlene will be teaching a Sunday Sweater class through the guild and availability is limited. Please contact the Coastal Cultured Purls for further information about their event.
This is a rare opportunity not to be missed if you are already a sock knitter and if you aren’t you have time to learn before she arrives. Amy is teaching a basis sock class on Tuesday night February 27th (so call the shop if you are interested) and then will follow up with a finishing class before Charlene arrives.
APRIL 13-15 Mountain Retreat for dying, knitting, and spinning. Please call the shop for details -----

PS – Mollie says “Hello” to you all. She was walking a dog for some one on the set and “followed” George --- She reports that he is even more handsome than the pictures. Hard to believe isn’t it ???
In case you don’t know: Mollie is a partner in this knitting business, but is currently living in a motel in Greenville, SC working on the movie set of Leatherheads – written, produced, and starring George Clooney. She may never return to the world of knitters after following George Clooney around. Who could blame her ????
